Men's Volleyball Falls to Drew in Season Opener

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Playing in their first match in 690 days, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team dropped a straight-set decision (25-14, 25-9, 25-15) to Drew University at The Hill Center on Thursday evening.

Ramizjon Khudoyorov (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) led the Bears (0-1) attack with six kills as four different Bears recorded a kill.

How it Happened

The opening set remained close with seven ties and two lead changes at the 11-all mark before the Rangers (1-4) distanced themselves with an 11-1 run. The Bears managed eight kills in the frame with Kudoyorov putting away four, but it wasn't enough to keep up the Rangers who hit .385 in the set.

Drew's .440 hitting and 28 kills over the final two sets was too much for the Bears as they led just briefly in the second and accumulated just six kills.

For the Bears

  • Khudoyorov finished with seven points also adding a solo block to his team-high six kills. He also shared the team lead with four digs.
  • Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) added four kills in his collegiate debut and dished out five assists with three digs.
  • Lordnel Saint-Jean (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and Rogers Hatanga Kwiringira (Corona, N.Y./Greater New York Academy) both added two kills each.
  • Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) handed out six assists with three digs in his debut.
