Men’s Volleyball Drops Skyline Opener to Ramapo

MAHWAH, N.J. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team lost in straight sets (25-11, 25-7, 25-17) to Ramapo College on the road to open Skyline Conference play on Tuesday evening.

Junior Ramizjon Khudoyorov (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) led the Bears with five kills and sophomore Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) compiled a team-high .273 hitting percentage and led the team with 10 digs. 

How it Happened

The Bears battled with the Roadrunners in the first set and led at 5-4 on a Helfant kill, but the Roadrunners pulled away with a 10-3 run and never trailed again. The hosts carried the momentum to the second and won the first 17 points of the set as the Bears couldn't slow down the Roadrunner attack that hit .538 in the frame. 

SJC saw some success in the third and raced out to an 8-3 lead to open the set behind a pair of kills from Khudoyorov and a kill and ace from Alejandro Oliveros (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grover Cleveland). The Bears still led at 13-12 in the frame, before a 7-1 run put the Roadrunners back on top for good.

For the Bears

  • Khudoyorov's five kills led the Bears in kills for the second straight match and he also added five digs and a solo block.
  • Oliveros dished out seven assists, delivered the only service ace for the Bears, and also logged five digs and a kill.
  • Helfant brought up a match-high 10 digs and added three kills on an error-free hitting night.
