Early Lead, Helfant’s Double-Double Not Enough for Men’s Volleyball at Mount Saint VIncent

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Returning to Skyline Conference play after a month hiatus, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team won the opening set on the road against the College of Mount Saint Vincent, but ended up falling in four sets (20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-20) on Tuesday evening at the Peter Jay Sharp Center.

Alex Helfant (Quito, Equador/Alliance Academy International) led the Bears (0-5, 0-2) reaching double-digit kills for the first time in his career finishing with 10, while also bringing up a match-high 19 digs.

How it Happened

The Bears raced out to an 11-2 lead to open the match and never trailed the rest of the set. The Dolphins (1-4, 1-0) pulled within five late in the frame, but couldn't get any closer before the SJC closed out the frame 25-20. Alex Helfant and his brother Matthew Helfant (Quito, Equador/Alliance Academy International) led the charge combining for six kills and three solo blocks.

CMSV never trailed in the second and leveled the match at one set apiece.

The third stanza saw both teams tied at 12-all before the hosts scored five straight and pulled away for a 2-1 set lead.

The Bears battled in the fourth and held an 18-17 late trying to force a deciding fifth set, but the Dolphins scored seven straight to earn five match points and the Bears could only erase one to fall in four.

  • A. Helfant's 10 kills and 19 digs were both season-highs for the Bears.
