SJC Long Island Flies Past Men’s Volleyball

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team suffered a straight-set loss (25-5, 25-4, 25-15) to first-place sibling rivals St. Joseph's College (Long Island) on Tuesday evening at The Hill Center.

How it Happened

The Bears (0-12, 0-9) we unable to slow down the potent Golden Eagle (18-3, 8-0) attack that put down 41 kills at a .638 clip for the match. After mustering nine points over the first two frames, the Bears saw their best offensive set in the third and remained within five midway through the set. Led by Matthew Helfant's (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) two kills and an ace in the set and Rogers Hatanga Kwiringira's (Corona, N.Y./Greater New York Academy) solo block, the Bears racked up 15 points.

For the Bears

  • Helfant led the team with three kills and an ace while brother Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) dished out five assists with a kill
  • Leonel Bravo (Astoria, N.Y./Queens Vocational & Technical) had four digs.
