Lady Bears Shut Out New Rochelle to Capture HVWAC Regular Season Crown

BROOKLYN, NY – Freshman Lisa Scheer (Queens, NY/Mary Louis) batted 3-for-6 with five RBI and pitched a complete game two-hit shutout in a sweep of New Rochelle on Saturday afternoon at the National Grid Softball Field.  St. Joseph's finishes conference play undefeated at 3-0 and captures their fourth Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference regular season title, last winning in 2007.

Senior co-captain Theresa Mendez (Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep) and freshman Caitlyn Kakavas (Queens, NY/St. Agnes) each hit 3-for-6 over the twin bill and combined for five runs scored and two batted in.

Alyson Chiaramonte(Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) tossed a five-inning no-hitter in the opener, striking out 13, improving to 8-3 on the season.  It is her second no-hitter of the season and third shutout.

The Lady Bears jumped all over starting pitcher Meghan Showellin game one plating three runs in the first inning on four hits, including doubles from Scheer and Mendez.  St. Joseph's connected for 14 hits off Showell and put the game out of reach in the third, scoring five runs to extend their lead to 10-0.  The Lady Bears finished the game after five innings, 12-0, by virtue of the eight-run rule.

In game two, the teams played a tight battle with a pitching duel between Scheer and Showell.  St. Joseph's scored their only three runs in the first inning, assisted by three Blue Angel errors.  Showell held the Lady Bears to three hits for the remainder of the game, while Scheer pitched a perfect game through 3.2 innings, before a giving up a single on a line drive hit back to the circle.

Scheer continued her dominance retiring the side in order in the fifth and sixth innings.  In the seventh, New Rochelle staged a late rally with their second hit and two walks to load the bases with one out sending the go-ahead run to the plate.  Carissa Cancemi (Queens, NY/Martin Luther) forced out the lead runner at the plate to preserve the shutout and Scheer closed out the game with a strikeout, her eighth of the game, to end the threat.

St. Joseph's improves to 15-7 on the season and extends their winning streak to seven.
