Lady Bears Open Conference Play With Sweep of Rival St. Elizabeth’s

MORRISTOWN, NJ – St. Joseph's College softball started their 2009 campaign for the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference title by defeating College of St. Elizabeth 3-1 and 7-1 on the road on Sunday afternoon.  With the win, the Lady Bears (6-6) improve to .500 for the season and are 1-0 in conference.  (Only the first game of a HVWAC doubleheader counts toward the conference record.)  St. Elizabeth falls to 5-15.

In the opener, St. Joseph's used solid defense to close out the first and second innings with two double plays.  St. Elizabeth got on the board first in the third inning scoring one run after an error allowed the leadoff batter to reach base.  The Lady Bears bats remained relatively quiet until the fifth inning when they loaded the bases with one out.  Jennifer Safi (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) delivered a run with a game-tying single and Caitlyn Kakavas (Queens, NY/St. Agnes) followed with the game-winning RBI, a two-run single.

With the lead in hand, starting pitcher Alyson Chiaramonte(Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) allowed only one runner over the final three innings to close out the conference win.  In her third win of the season, Chiaramonte allowed only three hits and struck out six giving up no earned runs.

In the second game, St. Joseph's jumped all over starting pitcher Isabel Machuca.  The first five batters each got a hit off Machuca, including two triples and scored four runs which proved to be the difference.  Machuca was replaced after the fourth run, not having registered an out.

The Lady Bears defense was solid once again.  In the second inning, the Eagles started a rally threatening to tie the game loading the bases with two outs and the top of the lineup coming to the plate.  A single to left scored one runner and the runner from second tried to score as well.  Chiaramonte, now playing in left field, gunned out the runner at the plate with a laser that ended the rally.  St. Elizabeth's put runners on the bases, but were unable to score any more runs stranding 10 runners for the game.

Lisa Scheer (Queens, NY/Mary Louis) had a terrific game at the plate and in the circle.  She nearly hit for the cycle, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two runs driven in and a triple and a double.  In the circle, Scheer picked up her third win of the season, striking out seven and allowing no earned runs.

For the two game set, the freshman accounted for 60 percent of the Lady Bears hits.  Caitlyn Kakavas(Queens, NY/St. Agnes) batted .667 (4-for-6), slugged 1.000, with a triple and three RBIs and two runs.  Scheer finished batting .571 (4-for-7), also slugging 1.000 with a triple, double, two RBIs and two runs.  Chiaramonte batted .500 (3-for-6), with a triple, two RBIs, one run scored and two stolen bases.  Sophomore Jackie Marinello (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne) added three hits and senior Theresa Mendez (Queens, NY/St, Francis Prep) scored three times.

St. Joseph's returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 5 for a home doubleheader against York College.  First game is scheduled for 5 p.m. at National Grid Softball Field in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
