Softball Loses to Mount Saint Vincent in Rain Shortened Game

BROOKLYN, NY – Alyson Chiaramonte (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) struck out 12 in a losing effort as the St. Joseph's College softball team fell to Mount Saint Vincent 4-1 in six innings on Wednesday night at National Grid Softball Field.

Not showing any signs of being affected by the rain, Chiaramonte overpowered the Dolphins, striking out all but one batter through the first three innings.

St. Joseph's threatened to open the game in the third, but stranded the bases loaded.

Mount Saint Vincent scored first in the fourth with a leadoff triple by and a passed ball accounting for the Dolphins first run.

St. Joseph's struggled to get baserunners all game drawing only four walks despite the wet conditions and only managed two hits.

With the conditions worsening and the game becoming official, the Lady Bears became desperate to tie the game or take the lead.  Carissa Cancemi (Queens, NY/Martin Luther) led off the fifth with a long at bat drawing a walk.  After advancing to second, a Gonzales wild pitch that rolled into the dugout allowed Cancemi to score, equalizing the game.  St. Joseph's had the opportunity to take the lead in the inning, but stranded a runner on third.

Play continued to the sixth inning and the wet conditions affected Chiaramonte's control as she walked three and allowed two hits in the inning.  Mount Saint Vincent loaded the bases with no outs and a wild pitch that also rolled into the dugout scored two runners, for the difference in the game.

Umpires declared the field unplayable due to the rain after the sixth.

Theresa Mendez (Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep) and Chriaramonte accounted for the only two hits of the game for the Lady Bears.  Chiaramonte allowed three earned runs on three hits with five walks.

St. Joseph's falls to 4-6 while Mount Saint Vincent improves to 5-6.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Saturday, April 4 for an afternoon home twin-bill against City Tech.  Game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at National Grid Softball Field in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
