Lady Bears Down Brooklyn College

BROOKLYN, NY – Alyson Chiaramonte (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) allowed only two runs and Caitlyn Kakavas (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes) and Emily Palmieri (Staten Island, NY/St. John's Villa) each drove in a run and scored once to lead the St. Joseph's College softball team to a 6-2 victory in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader against Brooklyn College on Thursday.   The nightcap was called due to darkness ending in a 3-3 tie.

St. Joseph's (15-8-1) took advantage of a Brooklyn throwing error to score the first run of the game in the top of the second, as the Bulldogs attempted to throw out Kakavas, who was advancing to third on a passed ball. Kakavas was hit by a pitch to reach base and later stole second.

The Bears would tack on two more runs in the top of the third rapping four hits against starter Nicole Barrasso (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht), with RBI singles from Kakavas and Palmieri scoring Danielle Marino (Maspeth, NY/Mary Louis) and Chiaramonte who singled earlier in the inning.

Brooklyn (14-11-1) would get on the board in its half of the third on an RBI triple to the gap from Danielle Maresca (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) that scored Kirsten Ingenito (Woodhaven, NY/Martin Luther). Ingenito came into the game as a pinch-runner for Nicole Barrasso, who had earlier singled to reach base.

Maresca would continue her clutch hitting and cut the deficit to 3-2 on an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to drive home Norah Marley (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney), who had singled to reach base.

The Lady Bears would put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh, Lisa Scheer (Bayside, NY/Mary Louis), Palmieri and Andrea Sideli (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) adding three runs aided by a pair of Bulldog errors.

Chiaramonte (8-3) picked up the victory going the complete game, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out six over seven innings. Her counterpart, Barrasso (11-10) took the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) on 10 hits, walking two and fanning five over seven innings.

The Bulldogs would jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the second game, taking advantage of a Lady Bears miscue, as it was Maresca who again jump started the Brooklyn offense with another RBI triple that plated Marley. Ashley Allen (Sunnyside, NY/William C. Bryant) also had a big hit in the rally with an RBI double that brought home Samantha Lombardi (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht).

St. Joseph's would answer with a three-run rally of its own in the top of the third, as Palmieri drew a bases loaded walk to score Marino.  Leter in the inning Jillian Troise (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) brought home Scheer and Mabel Vargas (Ridgewood, NY/Mary Louis) scored Kakavas with a pair of two-out RBI singles.

The game would be called after five innings due to darkness, ending in a 3-3 tie.

St. Joseph's returns to action this Saturday, April 17th facing another CUNY foe Lehman College in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. at National Grid Greenpoint Softball Field.
