Scheer Thows No-Hitter in Sweep of New Rochelle

BRONXVILLE, NY – Sophomore Lisa Scheer (Bayside, NY/Mary Louis) tossed a no-hitter (five innings) and struck out seven, leading the St. Joseph's College softball team to a Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference sweep of the College of New Rochelle 18-0 and 10-2 on Sunday afternoon.

In the opening game, Scheer (5-4) tossed four perfect innings in the circle before a leadoff walk in the fifth inning spoiled the perfect game bid.  It is the first no-hitter of Scheer's career and the first by a Lady Bear this season.  Alyson Chiaramonte (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) was the last Lady Bear to throw a no-hitter, also coming against New Rochelle last season.

Millicia Malvasio (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) and Scheer delivered RBI singles helping St. Joseph's to a six run opening frame and never turned back.  All six runs came unearned, the Lady Bears benefitting from three New Rochelle errors.

St. Joseph's added four more runs in the second and one in the fourth on a Malvasio single.  The flood gates opened in the fifth as the Lady Bears posted seven more runs on a Melissa Simo (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) two-RBI single and a Christina Girardi (Floral Park, NY/St. Francis Prep) grand slam, the first home run of her career.

Malvasio led St. Joseph's at the plate finishing 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.  Jackie Marinello (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored an RBI and a walk.

In the nightcap, freshman Mabel Vargas (Ridgewood, NY/Mary Louis) got the call for second start of the season in the circle.  Vargas went the distance for her second win, giving up two runs (one earned), striking out nine and walking one.

St. Joseph's scored again quickly plating five runs in the first with Jackie Marinello (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall), Lauren Norris (Sunnyside, NY/Long Island City) and Vargas delivering RBI singles.

Elizabeth Johnston got New Rochelle on the board in bottom of the first with a triple and scoring on a passed ball.

Both teams went scoreless until the fifth inning until the Lady Bears posted another five runs with Marinello and Norris picking up their second RBIs of the game to surpass the eight-run threshold.

The Blue Angels scored another run in the bottom half of the frame on a Johnston single, but not enough to extend the game.  Johnston finished the game going 3-for-3 with a double and triple, falling a home run short of the cycle.

Mabel and Norris finished the game going 3-for-4 to lead St. Joseph's, with Vargas scoring twice and Norris driving in two runs.

St. Joseph's (13-7) returns to action on Tuesday, April 13 hosting Old Westbury for a non-conference doubleheader at National Grid Greenpoint Softball Field.  Game one begins at 5:00 PM.
