Lady Bears Ground Screaming Eagles, Win Sixth Straight

BROOKLYN, NY – Alyson Chiaramonte (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) and Andrea Sideli (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) drove in three runs each leading the St. Joseph's College softball team to a non-conference sweep of College of St. Elizabeth, 8-0 & 11-0, both in five innings, on Tuesday evening at National Grid Softball Field.

In the opener, Chiaramonte got the call in the circle and tossed her sixth complete game shutout, scattering five hits, striking out eight and walking none in five innings of work.  Recently named USCAA Pitcher of the Week and AD3I Player of the Week, for the second time this season Chiaramonte won her fifth straight game improving her record to 11-3.

The Lady Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead helped by two Screaming Eagles' miscues.  Chiaramonte and Emily Palmieri (Staten Island, NY/St. John's Villa) each singled in a run and a Lisa Scheer (Bayside, NY/Mary Louis) flied out to left for a sacrifice fly.

St. Joe's took a 7-0 lead in the third inning helped by three more St. Elizabeth errors.  Chiaramonte led the action off with a single and later scored on a Palmieri grounder, her second RBI of the game.  Sideli highlighted the frame with a two run single and Jillian Troise (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) capped the scoring with a single, the third hit of the inning.

Scheer led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a Chiaramonte sacrifice to reach the eight run threshold.

St. Elizabeth's threatened in the fourth and fifth innings, advancing a runner to third with one out, but unable to deliver them home.  Isabel Machuca took the loss for the Eagles allowing eight runs (two earned) on seven hits, striking out two and walking two.

In the nightcap, Mabel Vargas (Ridgewood, NY/Mary Louis) and Scheer combined for a one-hit shutout.  Scheer earned the win, closing out the final three innings allowing no hits or walks and striking out three, improving to 7-5 in the circle.  Vargas got the start going two innings, allowing one hit and striking out two and walking one.

The Lady Bears scored three runs in the first inning started off by a Chiaramonte RBI single that extended her hitting streak to 19 games. Jackie Marinello (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall) later drove in two more runs, starting off a 3-for-3 day at the plate.

In the second, Malvasio and Vargas had back-to-back two out base knocks leading to two more tallies.

St. Joseph's tacked on a run in the third taking a 6-0 lead when Marinello led off with a single and later scored on an Eagle error with two outs.

The Lady Bears bats combined for six hits in the fourth to plate five runs highlighted by a two run drive by Amanda Castello that split the center fielder and right fielder going to the wall for a triple.  Sideli, Lauren Norris (Sunnyside, NY/Long Island City) and Christina Girardi also drove in a run with singles.

Alyssa Kirby picked up the lone hit for the Eagles.  Catherin Eber took the loss allowing 11 runs (six earned) on 11 hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Friday, April 23rd squaring off against Skyline foe Purchase College in a road doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
