Lady Bears Remain Undefeated Sweeping City Tech

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College softball team improved to 4-0 to start the 2010 season defeating City Tech twice by a 14-0 margin on Sunday afternoon at National Grid Softball Field.  Alyson Chiaramonte (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) collected four hits, three RBI and four runs and earned a win on the mound in game two, striking out 12.

For the twinbill, Chiaramonte led the Lady Bears with four hits and Jackie Marinello went 3-for-3 with a double.  Five Lady Bears drove in three runs each – Chiaramonte, Marinello, Lauren Norris (Sunnyside, NY/Long Island City), Emily Palmieri (Staten Island, NY/St. John's Villa) and Lisa Scheer (Bayside, NY/Mary Louis).  Chiaramonte and Millicia Malvasio (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) scored four runs each and Norris and Kakavas both crossed the plate three times. 

Scheer earned the victory in the opener, tossing four shutout innings, surrendering only three hits and striking out seven.  Mabel Vargas (Ridgewood, NY/Mary Louis) pitched two no-hit innings in relief, striking out three.

St. Joseph's travels to Tucson, Arizona on Tuesday making their fourth appearance in the Tucson Invitational Games.  The Lady Bears will play a total of six games, facing Edgewood College and Prairie State College beginning play on Thursday.

Game 1 – St. Joseph's 14, City Tech 0

In the opening frame, St. Joseph's sent 12 hitters to the plate and reached starter Genesis Tavarez for eight runs and never turned back.  The Lady Bears plated two runs in the second and fifth frame and single tallies in the third and fourth innings.

City Tech threatened Scheer's shutout in the fourth inning after a leadoff double and single placed runners at the corners, but Scheer shut down the side, picking up her sixth and seventh strikeouts of the game.

St. Joseph's scored all 14 runs on only eight hits, benefitting from the 17 walks issued by City Tech pitchers.  Tavarez went 3.1 innings and took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.

Chiaramonte led the Lady Bears going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Game 2 – St. Joseph's 14, City Tech 0

St. Joseph's scored nine runs in the second inning to take a 10-0 lead.  The inning was highlighted by a bases clearing triple by Palmieri who nearly had a grand slam.

Chiaramonte (2-0) overpowered the Yellow Jacket hitters with all 12 of her outs coming by strikeout.  Chiaramonte surrendered two hits and issued no walks and no Yellow Jacket advanced past first base.

The Lady Bears knocked 10 hits but City Tech committed seven miscues for the game.  Kakavas and Marinello led St. Joseph's each with a pair of hits and a pair of runs.
