Lady Bears Open HVWAC Play With Sweep of New Rochelle

BELLEROSE – St. Joseph's kicked off their Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference schedule with a doubleheader against New Rochelle. The Lady Bears took care of the Blue Angels, winning 11-3 and 12-0. St. Joseph's is now 16-4 and have won six straight games.

The Lady Bears jumped out to big leads in both games, scoring nine runs in game one and eight in game two. in the opening frame. Alyson Chiaramonte (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) pitched 4.1 innings in game one, striking out 11 and allowed no runs on only one hit. Freshman Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) relieved her, making her first appearance in the circle and allowed three runs (two earned) in 0.2 innings.

Staked with an 8-0 lead in game two, Lisa Scheer (Bayside, NY/Mary Louis) made light work of the Blue Angels lineup. Scheer didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning, her final inning of work. She struck out nine in four innings allowing just the two hits and no runs. Moran came in once again in the fifth and pitched a scoreless inning.

St. Joseph's put up 11 runs in game one on just seven hits. Their patient approach at the plate led to 12 walks. Danielle Marino (Maspeth, NY/Mary Louis) and Chiaramonte had two hits apiece. All nine starters scored at least one run in both games.

Marino was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with three runs and three RBI. Scheer hit her first home run of the season in game two. She picked up three more RBI and has 17 for the season.

Ten different Lady Bears drove home at least one run and scored at least one run in the doubleheader.

The Lady Bears head to Long Island on Wednesday, April 20th, to face three-time defending Skyline Champions, Farmingdale State. The doubleheader kicks off at 4:00 pm.
