Lady Bears Sweep Lehman to Wrap Road Stretch

BRONX, NY – St. Joseph's pitchers were on display Friday afternoon in the Bronx against Lehman, holding the Lightning to just one run in the doubleheader sweep. The bats certainly did their part as well, cruising to 9-0 and 9-1 victories. The Lady Bears wrapped up their six-game road trip going 4-2 and are 20-6 on the season, reaching the 20 win mark for the seventh time in program history.

Lisa Scheer (Bayside, NY/Mary Louis) and Alyson Chiaramonte (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) picked up the wins for the Lady Bears. They improve their records to 7-5 and 13-1 respectively. Scheer threw five innings and struck out five as she shut out the Lightning in game one. It was Scheer's second complete game shutout this season and upped her scoreless streak to nine innings.

Chiaramonte also went the distance for St. Joseph's. She struck out nine in her six innings of work allowing just the one earned run. In her 13 starts, Chiaramonte has allowed more than one earned run only three times.

St. Joseph's had their P.F. Flyers on swiping 15 bags in the doubleheader. The eight stolen bases in game two are the most since the team stole 11 bases in a game against Purchase in 2007. Caitlyn Kakavas (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes) and Andrea Sideli (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) led the stolen base party. They each stole three bases in game two, becoming the fifth and sixth players in St. Joseph's history to steal three or more bases in a single game. Kakavas also had a stolen base in game one, giving her four for the doubleheader.

Jackie Marinello (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall), Scheer, Kakavas, and Sideli all had two hits in game two, as the Lady Bears totaled 11 hits for the game. Sideli and Chiaramonte each had three RBI in the doubleheader to lead St. Joseph's.

St. Joseph's will celebrate Alumni, Family & Friends Day tomorrow afternoon as the Lady Bears return home to Padavan-Preller Field to take on SUNY Purchase at 1:00 pm.

Game 1 - St. Joseph's 9, Lehman 0 (5 inn)

St. Joseph's threatened early in game one, putting two runners on with two out in the first inning. Lehman was able to get out of that jam, but the Lady Bears scored in each of the next four innings.

With the game scoreless in the top of the second, the Lightning made quick work of the first two Lady Bears batters. A two-out walk to Jillian Troise (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) proved costly, as she didn't need a hit to come around and score. Troise stole second and advanced to third and scored on passed balls.

The Lady Bears broke the game open in the third and fourth innings, scoring three runs in each frame. St. Joseph's took advantage of some Lehman miscues to go up 4-0 after three. In the fourth, Marinello laced a one-out triple and scored when the Lightning misplayed the relay. Four batters later, Chiaramonte connected for the second triple of the inning, scoring two, as the Lady Bears took a 7-0 lead.

Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) cracked a two-out, two-run single in the fifth to give the Lady Bears nine runs and put the run rule into effect.

Game 2 – St. Joseph's 9, Lehman 1 (6 inn)

St. Joseph's didn't waste time scoring in game two, putting five runs across in the opening inning. For the second straight game, Marinello and Chiaramonte tripled in the same inning. Emily Palmieri (Staten Island, NY/St. John's Villa) picked up the biggest hit of the inning, her single drove in two and put the Lady Bears up 4-0.

Chiaramonte kept the Lightning off-balanced and they never posed a threat to the Lady Bears' lead.

St. Joseph's tacked on runs in the third, fifth and sixth. Sideli's RBI single, her second of the game, in the sixth inning put the Lady Bears up by enough to end the game after six innings.
