Farmingdale Hands Lady Bears Doubleheader Setback

FARMINGDALE, NY – The St. Joseph's College softball team couldn't get on the board against defending Skyline Conference champions Farmingdale State College, dropping 8-0 and 2-0 decisions on the road on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Bears managed only four hits against the dominating Farmingdale State (27-5) pitching that combined for 22 strikeouts on the afternoon.  Alyson Chiaramonte (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) (11-1) suffered her first loss in the circle for the season in the nightcap.

St. Joseph's (16-6) looks to bounce back from their first doubleheader setback, facing HVWAC rivals Sarah Lawrence College in another road contest on Thursday, April 21st starting at 5 pm.

Game 1 – Farmingdale State 8, St. Joseph's 0 (5 inn)

The Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening frame against Lisa Scheer (Bayside, NY/Mary Louis) who took the circle for the Lady Bears. That would be all four-time Skyline Pitcher of the Week Hope Zino would need as she struck out 14 to improve to 16-1.

The Lady Bears lone hit came in the 5th inning when Jackie Marinello (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall) doubled to right center, spoiling Zino's perfect game bid.

Farmingdale tacked on three runs in the fourth and a pair of runs in the fifth to reach the eight run threshold.

Game 2 – Farmingdale State 2, St. Joseph's 0

A two-out RBI single in the first inning by Nicole Farber gave Farmingdale a 1-0 lead against Chiaramonte. The Rams threatened in the fourth inning managing runners at second and third with one out, but Chiaramonte shut the door forcing an infield popup and a strikeout looking, finishing the game with seven strikeouts. Farmingdale tacked on a run in the fifth on an Aubrey Walker triple.

Trailing 2-0, the Lady Bears generated their first significant rally in their final at bat started by a Chiaramonte leadoff single. Caitlyn Kakavas (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes) then drew a walk bringing the go ahead run to the plate with no outs. But Farmingdale starter Heather Buckshaw preserved her shutout, forcing an infield ground out and recording her seventh and eighth strikeouts to close out the game.
