Kakavas and Chiaramonte Join Century Clubs During Lady Bears Sweep of Notre Dame of Maryland

BELLEROSE, NY – Senior Caitlyn Kakavas (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes) joined the 100-hit club and fellow senior and batterymate Alyson Chiaramonte (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) joined the 100-RBI club as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team cruised past Notre Dame University of Maryland, 13-0 and 16-2, in a pair of five-inning affairs at Padavan-Preller Field on Sunday afternoon.

St. Joseph's captures their sixth straight win and levels their record at 6-6, while Notre Dame falls to 1-7.  The Lady Bears also improve to 5-0 in the all-time series.

Kakavas knocked a double in the opener and a single through the left side in the nightcap to reach the milestone, becoming the ninth Lady Bear to receive membership to the illustrious club.

Chiaramonte, who achieved milestones in the circle last week recording her 50th win and 500th strikeout, had a massive day at the plate, going 5-for-7, accumulating six RBI, a triple, and a run scored to become the fifth Lady Bear to reach the 100 RBI mark.  Chiaramonte also improved to 4-3 in the circle, tossing a two-hit, complete game shutout in game one where she struck out 10.

Senior Lisa Scheer (Bayside, NY/Mary Louis) earned the win in the nightcap, improving to 2-3, going the distance and allowing five hits and two runs with a trio of strikeouts.  Scheer continued her hot bat, hitting successfully in all six games of the win streak, and finishing the afternoon with three hits, four RBI, two runs and two doubles.

The Lady Bears bats were pinging all afternoon as the Lady Bears rapped 31 hits at a combined .585 batting average and nine different Lady Bears registered multiple hits over the twinbill.

Sophomore Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) knocked four hits and scored three runs.  Senior Emily Palmieri (Staten Island, NY/St. John's Villa), junior Millicia Malvasio (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney), freshman Cassandra Molinari (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep) and junior Mabel Vargas (Queens, NY/Mary Louis) belted three hits apiece. Palmieri scored five runs with two RBI. Malvasio and Molinari each had three runs and three RBI. Vargas scored four times and drove in two runs.  Sophomore rookie Vanessa Alonzo (Wichita, TX/John Hirschi HS) recorded her first career hit, run and RBI, knocking hits in both ends of the doubleheader and scoring twice.

Chiaramonte and Scheer received all the runs they would need in the first inning.  Scheer contributed to Chiaramonte's cause roping a double that scored Vargas as the Lady Bears posted two runs to start off the opener.  After three runs in the next inning, St. Joseph's broke the game open with a seven-run third, highlighted by triples from Chiaramonte and Palmieri, sending 12 batters to the plate.

Chiaramonte returned the favor to Scheer in the nightcap with a two-RBI single that kicked off the scoring in a seven-run first.  The Lady Bears continued their scoring in bunches posting eight runs in the third, knocking eight of their season-high 17 hits, highlighted by two-RBI singles from Scheer and Andrea Sideli (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney).

St. Joseph's heads south for their second extended road trip of the season, travelling to San Juan, Puerto Rico to compete in the Caribbean Sports Carnival Games.  The Lady Bears begin their five-game series on Tuesday, April 3rd against the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras in a prime-time doubleheader starting at 6:30 p.m.
