Offense Combines for 30 Runs and 28 Hits, Scheer Collects 100th RBI in Sweep of Lehman

BRONX, NY – Seniors Alyson Chiaramonte (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) and Lisa Scheer (Bayside, NY/Mary Louis) tossed a pair of two-hitters, leading the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team to a sweep of Lehman College, 13-2 in five innings and 17-5 in six innings, on a wet Thursday night at the Lehman College South Field.

The Lady Bears (19-10) rang out 28 hits and scored 30 runs over the twinbill, highlighted by Scheer's 100 career RBI, a five-RBI game from Andrea Sideli (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) in the opener and a two-run home run from Danielle Marino (Maspeth, NY/Mary Louis) in the nightcap.

In the opener, St. Joseph's sent 12 Lady Bears to the plate in the second inning and posted six runs and threatened for more leaving the bases loaded.  St. Joseph's brought home runs on two-RBI singles from Marino and Sideli, and RBI singles from Chiaramonte and Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's).

After a scoreless third inning, St. Joseph's tacked on three more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a Sideli double that scored Chiaramonte and Caitlyn Kakavas (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes).  Sideli knocked a bases-loaded single in the fifth inning to drive in her fifth run of the game and Jillian Troise (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) cleared the bases with a triple to right center that capped off a four run frame that put the Lady Bears up 13-0.

Chiaramonte was one out away from her fourth no-hitter of the season, but a single from opposing pitcher Sheila San Andres spoiled the bid. After two more walks aided by the wet conditions loaded the bases, a two-out, two-RBI single from Genesis Batista ended her shutout bid.  But Chiaramonte sealed her 13th victory of the season with her 13th strikeout, one shy of her season-best.

The finale saw Lehman take slim one-run leads after the first and second frames, the Lightning scoring solo runs in both innings without a single hit or error, the wet conditions affecting game two starter Scheer who issued three walks and hit five batters in the first two innings.

The Lady Bears also benefitted from the wet conditions drawing three walks in the second inning including a bases-loaded walk by Scheer for her 100th career RBI and the Lady Bears first run.  A Sideli RBI single in the third knotted the game at 2-2.

In the fourth, Marino went yard with a two-run blast to left center, her first of the season, starting off a three-run frame to put the Lady Bears up for good.  The Lady Bears exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by four straight doubles from Scheer, Chiaramonte, Kakavas and Emily Palmieri (Staten Island, NY/St. John's Villa) that all plated runs.  But Lehman would score two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a pair of bases-loaded walks to cut the deficit to 12-5 and force an extra frame.

In the sixth, St. Joseph's took advantage of a pair of Lightning errors with two outs to score five runs.  Millicia Malvasio (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) rapped an RBI single and Jackie Perillo (Howard Beach, NY/Archbishop Molloy) followed with a two-RBI single to cap the scoring.  Scheer (6-4) worked a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half to close out the game.  Scheer surrendered just two hits, struck out six, allowed five runs (four earned), but hampered by the wet conditions, issuing 10 walks and hitting seven batters.

Marino, Sideli and Chiaramonte each knocked a team-leading four hits over the twin bill, with Marino filling up her stat line with five RBI, four runs, a home run, double, three walks and a stolen base.  Sideli collected six RBI, two runs, a double and a stolen base, while Chiaramonte accumulated four runs, two RBI, a double and a walk.

Scheer, Moran and Kakavas would rap three hits each; Scheer finishing with four RBI, a run and a double; Moran collecting two runs, a double and two stolen bases; and Kakavas an RBI, two runs and two doubles.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Saturday, April 28th hosting Brooklyn College at 4:30 p.m. at the SJC Outdoor Athletic Complex in Patchogue, NY.  The Lady Bears will celebrate Senior Day – as well as Alumni, Family and Friends Day – honoring their five graduating seniors, Chiaramonte, Kakavas, Scheer, Palmieri and Troise.
