USCAA Softball National Championship Field Announced, Lady Bears Earn Sixth Seed

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The full tournament field for the 2012 United States Collegiate Athletic Association Softball National Championships has been announced and St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) will make their fourth straight appearance entering as the #6 seed in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament to be held at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio from May 15-17.

St. Joseph's (25-10) will begin their quest with a first round matchup against #3 Spalding University (27-12) on Tuesday, May 15 at 4 p.m. It will be the first meeting in softball between the two schools. Spalding took home third place last season and enters as winners of 10 of their last 11.  The Golden Eagles also hold a common opponent with the Lady Bears this season, splitting with Hendrix College two weeks before the Lady Bears dropped a 4-2 extra inning decision to the Warriors at the Gene Cusic Classic in Florida.

Both teams will return to action at 8 p.m. regardless, facing either #2 Lindenwood University-Belleville (32-24) or #7 Penn State University-Beaver (24-16) in either the winners or losers bracket.  Lindenwood is a newcomer to the tournament, completing their inaugural softball season.  Penn State Beaver rides a 16-game winning streak and enter as PSUAC champions, their first title since 2009. St. Joseph's and Beaver met once at the 2009 championships with Beaver taking a 5-2 victory in an elimination game.

Carlow University (34-12), the champions of the American Mideast Conference, are the top seed making their first appearance in the championship in their first season of USCAA membership.

Rounding out the tournament field is last year's runner-up #4 St. Mary-of-the-Woods, #5 Briarcliffe College and #8 Penn State Mont-Alto.
