Lady Bears Sweep Weekly HVWAC Softball Honors For Second Straight Week

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team claimed all three Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) weekly awards as Mabel Vargas (Ridgewood, NY/Mary Louis) was named Softball Pitcher of the Week and Maria Randazzo (Brooklyn, NY/Fontbonne Hall) received Rookie of the Week honors, joining third baseman Cassandra Molinari (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep) who was named Player of the Week by the conference.

Vargas was the Lady Bears leading pitcher during the week going 1-1 in three appearances with 13.1 innings pitched compiling a 2.62 ERA. The senior righthander tossed a dazzling one-hit shutout against Sarah Lawrence on Sunday, allowing only one base runner to reach after the second inning. Vargas was equally impressive at the plate as she hit .538 (7-for-13) with three runs scored, two RBI and a triple during the week as the Lady Bears went 4-2.

Randazzo had an outstanding offensive week, batting 6-for-10 (.600) with four RBI, two runs scored and two doubles for the Lady Bears. The freshman receives her first HVWAC Rookie of the Week honor after leading the Lady Bears in on base percentage with .545 on the week. The outfielder had her best games of the week in St. Joseph's doubleheader at Sarah Lawrence as she combined to go 4-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored in the Lady Bears' sweep of the Gryphons.

Vargas receives Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season and Randazzo garners Rookie of the Week honors for the first time in her career.
