Wainwright Selected NFCA Second Team All-Region
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Sharing the team lead in batting and helping the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team double their win total from last season, freshman Amber Wainwright (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) has been named to the 2017 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III All-Region Team as a second-team selection for the Northeast region.
Wainwright is the first Bear in team history to earn NFCA postseason accolades adding to her Second Team All-Skyline Conference honors received last week. She is one of only six freshmen honored in the region and one of three from the Skyline Conference to land on the team.
Assembling one of the top rookie campaigns in program history, Wainwright was selected as a second-team designated player. She opened her collegiate career on a 10-game hitting streak and finished the regular season sitting atop the Skyline in batting with a .448 average—sharing the lead with teammate Kristin Ferrigno.
The freshman was recognized twice by the Association among their weekly top performances list and she was named the Skyline Player of the Week on April 3rd and Skyline Rookie of the Week on April 17th.
Starting in all 30 games, Wainwright helped guide the team to an 18-12 mark overall, a nine-win improvement over their 2016 campaign. She currently ranks 51st in the nation in batting average and totaling 32 RBI, she sits 53rd nationally in runs batted in per game—tops in the Skyline.
All-Region players are nominated and selected by NFCA member coaches in each of the eight Division III regions. Each All-Region Team is comprised of three 15-player teams with 360 players honored nationally. First Team All-Region choices are eligible for selection to the NFCA All-America team, which will be announced later this month at the NCAA Division III Championship banquet in Oklahoma City.
