Mecham and Hartwig Collect Skyline Softball Pitcher and Rookie of the Week Honors

NEW YORK — Helping lead the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team to a 4-0 mark, freshmen Jessica Mecham (West Jordan, Utah/Copper Hills) and Ashleigh Hartwig (Santee, Calif./West Hills) were named the Skyline Conference Softball Pitcher and Rookie of the Week for games played April 15-22, announced by the league office today.

The pair of accolades is the third weekly award collected by the Bears this season with Hartwig named Player of the Week two weeks ago.

Mecham compiled a 2-0 record in the circle firing two three-hit shutouts of John Jay and Sarah Lawrence to move into a tie for the league lead with her fourth shutout of the season. On the week, the rookie hurler fanned five batters and walked none in 10 innings of work. Mecham also contributed at the dish recording a pair of multi-hit games, batting .571 (4-for-7) on the week with four runs scored.

Hartwig batted a whopping .750 (9-for-12) accumulating five RBI, eight runs scored, four doubles and a pair of home runs. In the sweep of Sarah Lawrence on Friday that clinched the Bears second-straight Skyline Conference Championship berth, the freshman third baseman batted a perfect 6-for-6 over the twin bill with all of her hits going for extra bases (four doubles and two home runs).

Her three doubles in the opener and her two home runs in the nightcap matched two program single-game records and was the first time a Bear hit two home runs in a game since 2004. Hartwig moved her into the league lead for home runs (4), batting (.479), slugging (.771), RBI (35), and doubles (14) with her outstanding week.

Riding a four-game win streak, the Bears (14-17. 7-7 Skyline) take a break from league play for two non-conference doubleheaders against CUNYAC opposition this week facing Baruch on Tuesday, April 23 and the College of Staten Island on Thursday, April 25. St. Joseph's will wrap up their conference schedule on Saturday, April 27 meeting the College of Mount Saint Vincent at Gil Hodges Field with a chance to finish in a program-best fourth place.
