Hartwig Repeats as Skyline Softball Player of the Week; Mecham Snags Pitcher of the Week Honor

NEW YORK — Helping lead the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team to a four-game series sweep of Purchase College, juniors Ashleigh Hartwig (Santee, Calif./West Hills) and Jessica Mecham (West Jordan, Utah/Copper Hills) were named the Skyline Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, announced by the league office today.

It is the third and fourth accolade collected by the Bears this season. Hartwig is named Player of the Week for the second straight week and for the third time of her career. Mecham garners Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time this season and second time in her career.

Hartwig continued her torrid offensive output batting 8-for-10 (.800) and slugging 1.300 while extending her hitting streak to a team-long 13 games. She accumulated seven RBI, six runs scored, two triples, a double, two stolen bases, two walks, and two sacrifice flies.

During a 4-for-4, five-RBI, two-run effort in game four of the series on Sunday, Hartwig joined the coveted 100-hit club, doing so in just 63 games and 199 at bats — the fastest in team history to reach the milestone.

Mecham fired a pair of complete-game shutouts in back-to-back starts to notch her league-leading sixth win of the season in the circle. She also tossed three perfect innings in a relief effort to pick up her first save of the season. In 13 scoreless innings of work over the weekend, Mecham struck out 13, scattered eight hits, and walked none.

At 12-3 overall and 9-3 in Skyline play with a half-game lead for first place, the Bears host the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, April 24 in a doubleheader starting at noon. Live stats and video will be available on SJCBears.com.
