Hartwig Nabs Third Player of the Year Honor Leading Program-Best Six Selections to the All-Skyline Softball Team

Hartwig Nabs Third Player of the Year Honor Leading Program-Best Six Selections to the All-Skyline Softball Team

NEW YORK —  Already the first St. Joseph's University Brooklyn student-athlete in any sport to receive multiple Skyline Player of the Year awards, senior Ashleigh Hartwig (Santee, Calif./West Hills) collected the honor for the third-straight season as the league announced their year-end awards this morning.

Six Bears were named to the All-Conference Teams with sophomores Bella Gomez (Whittier, Calif./Sonora) and Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) joining Hartwig on the first team and senior Vivian Tomovich (San Diego, Calif./Serra), sophomore Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills), and freshman Bella Hurtado (San Diego, Calif./Olympian) earning second-team praise. Junior Kristen Oddo (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) was also recognized with a spot on the All-Sportsmanship Team.

The Bears assembled the most successful season in team history since joining the Skyline Conference with 24 wins that included two postseason victories and a third-place finish in the 2022 Skyline Championship.

Hartwig concludes her career as the all-time program leader in batting average (.521), on-base percentage (.569), slugging (.791), doubles (49), and total bases (269). The third-baseman was among the very best hitters in Division III this season with her team-leading .556 batting average and .619 on-base percentage ranked in the top five in the nation. The three-time Skyline first-teamer set a Bears single-season record of 60 hits with 15 doubles that were tops in the conference. Hartwig hit successfully in 33 of 36 games she played and reached base safely in all but one game. She concludes her career having struck out just five times in 391 plate appearances.

Gomez earns a spot as a first-team outfielder starting in all but three games this season. Hitting out of the leadoff position for the majority of the season, the sophomore set the table for the Bears offense that was third in the country in scoring. She stole a league-high and Bears single-season record 24 bases this season and was fourth in runs scored with 42.  She finished her rookie season batting .408 with a team second-best 42 hits — 12 going for extra bases.

Heinsch stands beside classmate Gomez in the first-team outfield. Teaming up with Gomez batting number two ahead of Hartwig, she compiled a .358 batting average and led the league in runs scored with a new Bears single-season record 47, while stealing a team second-best 13 bases. Also one of the most potent hitters in the lineup, Heinsch knocked 15 extra-base hits, sharing the team lead with four homers and five triples that matched the Bears' single-season record. Defensively, she was error-free in 23 chances.

Tomovich caps off her career with a second-team selection at designated player. She was the second option atop the lineup at leadoff and playing in 30 games, she assembled a batting average of .320 and a slugging percentage of .413 — her fourth-straight season posting numbers above .300 and .400 in both categories. She also collected 18 runs, 14 RBI, four doubles, a home run, and six stolen bases.

Poppett was named the second-team utility player splitting time at pitcher, first base, and outfield. In the circle, the rookie sophomore was a two-time Pitcher of the Week winner, working a team-high 65.2 innings and sharing the team lead with six victories. She tossed six complete games with two shutouts, striking out 38. As a hitter, Poppett finished the regular season with a .822 slugging percentage that was second in the Skyline with her team-high-tying four home runs tying for fourth in the conference.

Hurtado rounds out the six all-conference selections as second-team second-baseman. The true freshman collected two Rookie of the Week awards this season. In conference games, she led the league in on-base percentage (.750) and OPS (1.607) and was second in batting average (.619). Appearing in 30 games on the year, she compiled a .464 average with 18 RBI, 19 runs, five doubles, a home run, and three stolen bases.

Oddo lands on the All-Sportsmanship team after playing in 14 games and finishing with a .529 slugging and .500 on-base percentage. The junior drove in six runs, scored five times, and blasted her first collegiate home run in the win over Yeshiva.

Hartwig becomes the first three-time All-Conference honoree in team history. It is the first All-Conference award for Gomez, Heinsch, Tomovich, Poppett, and Hurtado.

The Bears finished their season at 24-14 overall, their most wins since 2015 and the sixth-most all-time.

The Skyline All-Conference teams and Player, Pitcher, Rookie, and Coach of the Year were voted on by the league's head coaches prior to the start of the 2022 Skyline Championship.
