Softball, Hartwig Crowned NCAA Division III Statistical Champions

BROOKLYN, N.Y. —  Following an outstanding offensive campaign that the Bears ranked among the nation's best all season, the St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) softball team has been crowned the 2022 NCAA Division III statistical champion in batting average, runs per game, and doubles per game. Additionally, Ashleigh Hartwig (Santee, Calif./West Hills) was the individual statistical champion in on-base percentage.

As a team, the Bears compiled a .393 batting average and .485 on-base percentage, knocking program single-season records of 407 hits, 105 doubles, and 21 home runs. The Bears averaged 9.08 runs per game to finish as the top scoring team in the nation. SJBK also placed in the top 10 finishing third in slugging percentage (.578), sixth in walks (158), and eighth in hit by pitch (40).

After rewriting the Bears record book in several single-season and career categories and capturing her third Skyline Player of the Year honor, Hartwig was crowned the individual champion in on-base percentage with a .619 average. She also finished third in batting with her single-season record-tying .556 average and was the seventh toughest to strikeout in the nation with just one strikeout in 108 at bats.

Also placing high among the national leaders was All-Skyline Second Team honoree Bella Hurtado (San Diego, Calif./Olympian) who was 12th in on-base percentage (.562). All-Skyline First Team selections Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) and Bella Gomez (Whittier, Calif./Sonora) led the top scoring team in the nation finishing 14th and 32nd individually in runs per game with 1.31 and 1.20, respectively. Gomez also cracked the top 50 in stolen bases per game, placing 45th after swiping an SJBK-record 24 bags.

These are the first NCAA statistical championships earned in Bears softball history. Brooklyn athletics has had one previous team champion (women's soccer, 2014) and three individual champions (men's volleyball, 2012 & two in women's soccer, 2014). Commemorative plaques from the NCAA honoring the achievements will be placed in The Hill Center lobby trophy case.
