No. 3 Softball’s Season Comes to Close in Elimination-Game Defeat to No. 4 Mount Saint Mary
PURCHASE, N.Y. — The 2023 season came to a close for the No. 3-seeded St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) softball team as they fell to the No.4-seeded Mount Saint Mary College, 5-3, in the Skyline Conference Softball Championship on Friday afternoon. The Bears round out the season with a 25-14 overall record.
How it Happened
Olivia Ferara's lead-off home run gave the Knights, serving as the visiting team, an early 1-0 advantage. The Bears responded in the bottom of the first as Sofia Logreco's (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) bunt saw Bella Gomez (Whittier, Calif./Sonora) score to tie the affair at 1-1. The Bears held a 2-1 edge after Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) drew a bases-loaded walk in the second.
The deadlock was broken in the fourth before MSMC broke the game open with a three-run seventh inning. Ferara brought in two of the Knights' three runs, courtesy of a two-RBI double, to hold a 5-2 advantage.
Leila Heller (Belle Chasse, La./Belle Chasse) managed to pull a run back in the bottom half of the inning, a two-out double that scored Brianna Kilimet (Valley Stream, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy). Unfortunately, the Knights picked up the game's final out, eliminating the Bears from the tournament.
