Women’s Swimming Downs John Jay For Second Straight Win

NEW YORK — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team won eight of 11 events and earned a 50-40 victory over John Jay College on Monday evening. Freshman Kathryn Cosenza led the Bears with a pair of individual victories to help St. Joseph's improve to 3-4 overall.

SJC Highlights

  • The Bears jumped out to an early lead with Julia Dineen, Rebecca Bollmann, Shannon Doherty and Jessica Gnad teaming up for a four-second victory in the opening 200-yard medley relay (2:14.89).
  • Freshman Kathryn Cosenza collected two of SJC's individual event wins in the 50-yard freestyle (30.85) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:10.67).
  • Senior Julia Dineen swam a personal-best 1:15.80 in the 100-yard backstroke to win by .14 seconds, the closest race of the meet.
  • Swimming the events for the first time this season, sophomore Shannon Doherty took first in the 500-yard freestyle (6:41.99) and swam a personal-best 2:43.13 in the 200-yard individual medley en route to a second place finish.
  • Freshman Eireann Corbett notched a first-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle (14:48.08) and collected third-place points in the 200-yard individual medley (3:08.25).
  • Freshman Jessica Gnad won the 100-yard butterfly by 15 seconds in 1:10.67. She also earned third-place points in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:28.31).
  • Junior Brianna Minogue contributed a pair of second-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (2:38.25) and 500-yard freestyle (7:34.85) and led off the winning 200-yard freestyle relay. 
  • Freshman Rebecca Bollmann was out touched in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:22.63) for first place and seized third place in the 100-yard backstroke (1:18.84).

  • St. Joseph's has won the last two meetings against the Bloodhounds and has tied the all-time series at 2-2.

Next Up for the Bears

The women's team will try to move to .500 with their third straight win facing Hunter College on Friday, December 1 in a dual meet starting at 6 p.m. in Manhattan.
