Mangan’s Double-Double Leads Lady Bears Past La Sierra

WHITTIER, CA – Playing in California for the first time since 2008, the St. Joseph's College women's basketball team opened the Whittier College Purple and Gold Classic with a 66-58 victory over La Sierra University (0-17).  Freshman guard Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) recorded her first career double-double netting 14 points and a pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds (eight offensive).

The Lady Bears also weathered a 30 point barrage from junior forward Audrey Ramos to secure the wire-to-wire victory, their first since December 5th, ending a four-game skid.  It also marks the first win over fellow AD3I member La Sierra in three meetings.

Mangan connected on two three-pointers to score eight of her 12 first half points in the opening five minutes, helping St. Joseph's build a 10 point advantage.  The Lady Bears led by as many as 16 before taking a 41-32 advantage at the break.

St. Joseph's extended their lead back to 15 early in the second stanza before a 10-3 La Sierra run brought the lead back to eight, 55-47, with 8:36 remaining.  A steal and layup from junior forward Allison Kavanagh (Woodhaven, NY/Mary Louis) with 3:53 left pushed the Lady Bear lead to 12 putting the game seemingly in control, but La Sierra made a final comeback attempt cutting the lead to five with 44 seconds left.  But that would be the closest the Golden Eagles would come as the Lady Bears scored the final three points to hold off La Sierra for the 66-58 victory.

St. Joseph's held a distinct rebounding advantage 56-34, their largest margin this season and only the third time this season in the positive.  The Lady Bears also dominated the offensive glass grabbing 24 offensive rebounds, creating 22 more shot attempts converting 20 second chance points and negating the La Sierra shooting advantage (40.4% to 35.4%).  The Lady Bears also committed only 11 turnovers, their lowest total since committing 10 miscues in the season opener against Yeshiva.

Mangan shot 40% from the floor (6-for-15) including 2-for-6 from behind the arc.  She also dished out a team-high four assists and had a pair of steals.  Sophomore guard Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) tallied 13 points on 6-for-11 shooting in only 18 minutes of work, coming in as a second half reserve.  Sophomore forward Kristin Binckes (Brooklyn, NY/St. Savior)scored a career high matching eight points and had seven rebounds, making her first start in seven games.  Freshman forward Janine Doran (South Ozone Park, NY/Archbishop Molloy) grabbed a career high nine boards.

For La Sierra, Audrey Ramos attempted nearly half of the team's shots shooting 47.8% (11-for-23) and 4-for-10 from distance.  She also grabbed a team high eight rebounds and had five assists.  Ramos' 30 points is the highest individual total allowed by the Lady Bears since Valleri West of Apprentice scored 31 points on January 31, 2009.  Sophomore guard Laura Ramos added 13 points and had seven assists and seven rebounds.

St. Joseph's (5-7) will face host Whittier College in the second game of the Purple and Gold Classic on Sunday, January 3rd, before boarding a plane to return to New York.
