Lady Bears Falter Against Brooklyn College

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College women's basketball team lost to Brooklyn College (5-3) 77-46 on Tuesday night at Brooklyn Technical High School.  Senior Julia Serewko (Woodside, NY/Mary Louis) and sophomore Kristin Binckes (Brooklyn, NY/St. Savior) led St. Joseph's with eight points each.  Brooklyn College was carried by senior Frances Lyons (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) who recorded a game-high 20 points with Amber Gordon (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) adding 16 points.

Brooklyn College opened an early double digit lead (18-8) with a 10-2 run.  The Bulldogs led by as many as 17 points before taking a 35-20 advantage into the lockers.  Lyons and Gordon dominated the first half, outscoring the Lady Bears netting 12 points apiece on 53.8 percent shooting (7-for-13) from the floor and a perfect combined 10-for-10 shooting from the free throw line.

St. Joseph's had few answers coming out of the break as Brooklyn opened on a 15-4 run extending their lead to 28, keeping their lead out of jeopardy.  The Bulldogs also increased their output in the second half shooting 47.2 percent (17-for-36).

Both teams were nearly identical in turnovers with the Lady Bears committing one more (27-26) and the Bulldogs more opportunistic in converting the miscues into points (22-14).  Brooklyn College also made the most of second chance points (19-10) despite the two teams remaining equal in offensive rebounds (19-19).

Serewko also pulled down a team-high seven boards (four offensive) and had a pair of rejections and thefts.  Binckes' eight points sets a season-high and matches her career best, which she accomplished twice last season.  She also grabbed five rebounds and had two steals and a block.  Sophomore guards Joanna Marciniec (Glendale, NY/Baruch) and Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) chipped in seven points each.

For Brooklyn College, junior Priscilla Ramirez (Brooklyn, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, adding seven points and two blocks.  Sophomore Alexandra Sbordone (New York, NY/School of the Future) netted nine points in eight minutes of work, connecting on three triples.

St. Joseph's returns to the .500 mark (4-4) and hosts sibling campus St. Joseph's-Long Island on Saturday, December 12 as the opening game of a doubleheader at Brooklyn Technical High School.  In the event billed "Clash for the Cup," both campuses will face off for rights to the first ever SJC Cup and in the spirit of the holidays, the winning campus will receive $750 to award to a charity of their choice while the losing campus will receive $250.
