Binckes’ Career Best Helps Lady Bears Hold Off City Tech

BROOKLYN, NY – Kristin Binckes (Brooklyn, NY/St. Savior) tallied a career-high 17 points as the St. Joseph's College women's basketball team defeated City Tech 73-62 in a wire-to-wire victory at the Kiltgord Center on Monday evening.

Binckes' 17 points (on 8-for-11 shooting) more than doubled her previous best of eight points, which she hit four times including twice this season.  The sophomore forward also pulled down a team-high five rebounds and had a trio of assists and steals.

All 10 Lady Bears scored at least two points and the St. Joseph's depth proved to be a factor, outscoring City Tech 28-3.  Freshman guard Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) netted 14 points, her fourth straight game in double-figures and sixth this season, and dished out a game-high five assists.  Sophomore guard Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) chipped in 13 points in a reserve role.  Freshman Stephanie Quick (Howard Beach, NY/Stella Maris) and sophomore Joanna Marciniec (Glendale, NY/Baruch) added seven points each.

For City Tech, Christine Jackson led all scorers and four Lady Yellow Jackets in double figures with an 18 point, 11 rebound double-double.  Daquana Miller had 17 points on 3-for-7 shooting from distance.  Barbara Richards and Ayana Cinque added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

St. Joseph's stormed out of the gates to take a 12-0 lead in the first three minutes of play.  City Tech regained their composure and put together a 14-3 run to cut the deficit to one.  Midway through the frame, Marciniec scored all her seven points in a one minute span that helped St. Joseph's extend their lead again.  Mangan and Quick also scored seven apiece in the half helping the Lady Bears lead by as many as 14 before taking a 40-30 lead at the break.

Early in the second stanza, the Lady Yellow Jackets utilized their athleticism to force the tempo of the game into an up-and-down full court battle and they cut the deficit to three on two occasions prompting a coach Frank Carbone timeout to settle the team.  After the timeout, the Lady Bears dissected the Lady Yellow Jacket defense with smart passing, which generated good scoring opportunities and free throw chances and St. Joseph's outscored City Tech 13-5, pushing the lead back to double digits.  The Lady Bears utilized its 50.0% shooting in the frame (13-for-26) to maintain their lead and take the 73-62 victory, snapping their two game losing streak.

St. Joseph's shot 47.4% (27-for-57) from the floor, their highest output this season.  The Lady Bears also shot another season-best 50.0% (4-for-8) from behind the arc after entering the game averaging an 18.1% connect rate.  City Tech held a 50-31 advantage on the glass, but the Lady Bears won the turnover battle 19-27 and generated 26 points off turnovers.  Poor free throw shooting hurt City Tech as they shot 30.8% from the charity stripe and missed 18 attempts which could have brought them back into the game.

St. Joseph's (6-9) has a full week off, before returning to action at home as the lead game of a doubleheader against Southern Maine CC on Monday, January 18.  Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. with the men to follow at approximately 3 p.m.
