Five Lady Bears in Double Figures as St. Joseph’s Defeats Albertus Magnus

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College women's basketball team led from start to finish, taking down Albertus Magnus, 79-61. The Lady Bears played a complete game in all phases as five girls eclipsed ten points and the team collected a season high 62 rebounds. The last time the Lady Bears surpassed 60 rebounds was January 30th 2007, in a game against New Rochelle. St. Joseph's also dished out 22 assists and caused 25 Lady Falcon turnovers as each aspect of their game was working.

The Lady Bears got out to a fast start, taking a 22-10 lead over the Lady Falcons. Junior Caitlyn Kakavas (Bayside, NY/St. Agnes) scored six straight points during the stretch to grab the double figure lead. St. Joseph's continued to push the pace and headed into the lockers with a commanding 44-21 advantage.

Knowing how quickly Albertus Magnus can come back, St. Joseph's kept their foot on the gas to open up the second half. Senior Tara Gleason (Woodside, NY/Stella Maris) hit a jumper with 16:33 to play to give the Lady Bears a 29 point lead, their biggest on the night. The Lady Bears were willing to trade baskets and take time off the clock, cruising to victory.

St. Joseph's got big time performances out of their bench tonight – Kakavas scored a career high 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) had a team high 15 points and five assists.

Also coming off the bench, junior Kristin Binckes (Brooklyn, NY/St. Savior) had her most productive night of the season, grabbing a team high 13 boards in 16 minutes of action to tie her career high.

Sophomore forward Janine Doran (South Ozone Park, NY/Archbishop Molloy) remained hot as she has now scored in double digits in five of her last seven games. Doran finished with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting and was a force on the defensive glass, grabbing a team-high tying seven defensive rebounds and eight for the game.

Freshman Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) continued her impressive rookie campaign, scoring 12 and bringing home nine rebounds, while leading scorer Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) chipped in with 11 points and a game high six assists.

The Lady Falcons were led by Lindsay Karle who had a game high 18 points and Bianca Brown who posted a double-double with ten points and a game high 17 rebounds. Lianna Carrero was the only other Lady Falcon with 10+ points, she finished with 13.

St. Joseph's doesn't have much time to celebrate, as they welcome USCAA rival The Apprentice School to town on Saturday. The game will feature two top-15 USCAA clubs with the Lady Bears coming in at #12 and the Lady Builders a few spots ahead at #7. The Apprentice School has taken the last six contests from St. Joseph's, including last season's 75-74 classic that was decided in the final seconds. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm and will follow the Lady Bears swim team taking on Mount Saint Vincent at 4:00 pm.
