Brooklyn Uses Strong Second Half To Take Borough Battle From Women's Basketball

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Sophomore Victoria Porcasi (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) led all scorers for the second straight game with 17 points, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team couldn't overcome their borough foes dropping a 74-50 non-conference decision to Brooklyn College on Friday evening.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Brooklyn 74, St. Joseph's 50
  • Records:  Brooklyn (14-4), St. Joseph's (5-12)
  • Location: Brooklyn, N.Y.
  • Arena: West Quad Gymnasium

Turning Point

  • Brooklyn used a 14-2 run to open the third quarter to break open a six-point game at halftime and kept away for good.

How it Happened

  • A sloppy first half of play saw both teams combine for 27 turnovers. Despite being plagued by 20 turnovers in the half, the Bears trailed by just six points headed into the lockers down 26-20 in a low-scoring opening 20 as the Bulldogs struggled to find the range and shot just 10-of-47 before the intermission and missed all 11 of their three-point attempts.
  • After the poor 21 percent shooting effort in the first half, Brooklyn came out of the lockers with determination and broke the game open scoring 14 straight points over three-and-a-half minutes to balloon their lead to 18 and never let the Bears back into the game.
  • Despite the Bears also improving their connect rate in the second half, the Bulldogs finished the game with 47 percent shooting to keep away and never let their lead fall back to single digits.

For the Bears

  • Sophomore Victoria Porcasi led SJC in scoring for the fourth straight game with her fifth straight game in double digits with 17 points and six rebounds.
  • Junior Destiny Marino snapped her two-game streak held to single digits tallying 14 points and four rebounds.
  • Freshman Lauren Quesada netted nine points with six rebounds and handed out a team-high four assists.
  • Sophomore Alyssa Alioto made her first career start and had career- and team-highs of seven rebounds and three steals.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Bulldogs outscored the Bears 32-11 in points off turnovers and 20-7 in second-chance scoring.
  • Olivia Colbert registered a 16-point, 13-rebound double-double to lead four in double-figure scoring for Brooklyn with 10 different Bulldogs adding to the ledger.

The Bear Facts

  • The Bulldogs have won nine straight meetings in the Battle of Brooklyn and improve to 15-10 in the all-time series.
  • St. Joseph's wraps up the non-league portion of their schedule with a 2-5 mark.
