Women's Basketball Turned Away By Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. —  Freshman Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) led three Bears scoring in double figures and senior Kelly O'Donnell (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) turned in her third double-double of the season but it wasn't enough to upend borough rivals Brooklyn College in a 78-53 non-conference road defeat on Tuesday.

How It Happened

The Bulldogs (4-1) build an early 9-3 lead before six points from Emma Kiley (Whitestone, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and a triple from Kennedy cut the Bears (0-4) deficit to 14-12 with just under two minutes to play in the opening period.

But the hosts responded with an 18 unanswered spanning the end of the 1st into midway into the second and maintained a 39-21 lead at the half.

SJC couldn't chip away at the deficit in the final 20 as the Bulldogs maintained over a 43 percent connect rate for the game while the Bears were held to under 30 percent shooting. In the fourth quarter, Kennedy scored 11 of the Bears 16 points knocking down three trifecas in the frame.

For the Bears

  • Kennedy scored her team-high 14 off the bench in just 11 minutes of action and finished shooting 5-of-10 from the field and 4-of-8 from three-point land. She also grabbed a pair of rebounds and swiped as many steals.
  • O'Donnell registered her 35th career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Kiley turned in 13 points with five boards, three assists and a block.
  • Fatima Monsour (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) chipped in eight points with two caroms.
  • Alexis Breen (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) handed out seven assists and pulled down seven boards.
