Women's Basketball Pair Notch Double-Doubles in Defeat to Widener

NEW YORK — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team opened their participation at the Hunter College Tipoff Classic with an 80-56 defeat to Widener College on Friday afternoon from the Hunter Sportsplex.

How it Happened

A Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas/William Howard Taft) triple to begin the contest was countered by a 10-2 run by the Pride. Kristen Donovan's (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) three-pointer with under five minutes brought the Bears' deficit down to three, 15-12, before concluding the period trailing by five, 21-16.

Widener scored the first seven points of the second period to see their lead grow to 12, 28-16. St. Joseph's quickly chipped at the Pride lead, coming to within seven at the 2:27 mark, 32-25. A Pride jumper at 57 seconds resulted in the 34-25 halftime score.

Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) and Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) banked three balls early in the third quarter, bringing the Bears to 40-34. An 11-2 run following Kennedy's jumper at 7:26 distanced the Pride from the Bears, holding a 61-43 lead by the end of the third quarter.

The Bears trailed by no less than 13 in the fourth as Widener completed their 80-56 win, continuing their unblemished start to the season.

  • Hurt led all SJBK scorers with 15 points while pulling 10 boards, dishing a pair of assists, and forcing two steals.
  • Perez collected a game-high 13 caroms to go with 11 points and five assists.
  • Donovan finished with 12 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
  • Kennedy totaled 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
  • Domenika Sanchez (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Santo Domingo de Guzman) logged eight points and two assists.
