Women’s Basketball Falls to Hunter; Hurt Named to All-Tournament Team

NEW YORK — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team suffered an 85-72 defeat to Hunter College in the second game of the Hunter Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Averaging 21.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in two days, Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) was named to the Hunter Tip-Off All-Tournament Team. She scored a season-best 28 points and pulled 11 rebounds.

How it Happened

Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas/William Howard Taft) and Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) banked three-pointers as part of an 8-2 start to the game. After a 9-0 spurt from the Hawks, the lead exchanged hands six times before the Bears possessed a four-point edge at the end of the opening 10 minutes, 28-24.

Hurt's three-ball at 8:20 in the second saw the Bears hold their largest lead of the game, 32-24. Hunter strung together a 10-2 run following Hurt's bucket to regain the advantage. 10 SJBK points in the final three minutes saw the navy and gray hold a one-point lead, 46-45, at the intermission.

The hosts broke the contest open thanks to a 21-9 third quarter. Hurt netted 10 points in the second half, eight of which came in the fourth. Perez had seven of her own but their efforts were not enough in their 13-point defeat, 85-72.

  • Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) had 15 points, six rebounds, two assists, and as many steals.
