Lady Bears Soccer Scores 12 in Rout of Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team exploded for 10 second half goals en route to a 12-0 shutout of Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference foe Medgar Evers College on Thursday evening at Aviator Field.

The Lady Bears (2-2-1, 1-1 HVWAC) were led by freshman Pamela Chernyakhovsky (Brooklyn, NY/Leon M. Goldstein) who tallied four goals and assisted on two goals to register 10 points. Junior Cynthia Gambino (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) scored three goals and added an assist.  It is the first career hat trick for Chernyakhovsky and Gambino.

Seven different Lady Bears found the back of the net in the contest with Daniela Semilia (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney), Shannon Rom (Rockaway Point, NY/Bishop Kearney), Glenda Ascencio (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn International) and Christina Abbate (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) each scoring their first career goals.

Chernyakovsky opened the scoring in the 13th minute burying a ball from Daniella Valencia (Corona, NY/Bayside HS), who finished with two assists. Two minutes later St. Joseph's struck again when Semilia sprinted past the Cougar defense and scored on a breakaway.

Despite the early goals, St. Joseph's carried only a 2-0 lead into the break. The Lady Bears held a 19-1 shooting advantage in the first period, the Medgar Evers goal leading a charmed life with St. Joseph's hitting several posts and unable to finish a couple open scoring chances.

The flood gates would open in the second half, Rom scoring just one minute into the period and Chernyakhovsky later scoring three goals in an eight minute span, two coming off direct kicks from outside the box.

Junior Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport HS) saw limited action in her defensive end, making one save in her only shot faced for her second shutout of the season.

St. Joseph's ships up to Boston this weekend to take on Pine Manor College on Saturday, September 29th for a non-conference tilt starting at 1 p.m.
