Lady Bears Soccer Blanks Yeshiva in HVWAC Finale

YONKERS, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team clinched second place in the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference standings in their inaugural varsity season, defeating Yeshiva University, 6-0, in their final regular season conference game at Tibbetts Brook Park on Thursday night.

St. Joseph's (4-3-2, 3-1 HVWAC) wins their second straight, assembling their first winning streak of the season. Yeshiva (0-8, 0-4 HVWAC) still searches for their first victory of the season.

The Lady Bears got on the board quickly, junior Katherine King (Levittown, NY/MacArthur HS) scoring the game-winner in the third minute putting away a rebound off her own shot.

Freshman Pamela Chernyakhovsky (Brooklyn, NY/Leon M. Goldstein) put the Lady Bears up 2-0 with a chip shot in the 24th minute. Chernyakhovsky led the Lady Bears with nine shots putting six on net.

Junior Cynthia Gambino (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) scored the next three goals for the Lady Bears to record her second hat trick of the season and has scored tallies in four of the last five games. Gambino found the back of the net in the 35th minute and added two second-half goals, both off feeds from sophomore Shannon Rom (Rockaway Point, NY/Bishop Kearney). Rom finished with four points with two assists and scoring her second goal of the season capping the scoring in the 78th minute.  

Junior Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport HS) made five saves to record her fifth shutout of the season. The Lady Bears maintained a 23-12 shot advantage for the contest.

St. Joseph's returns to action hosting Fisher College of Boston, Mass. on Sunday, October 21.  The game will be the tail end of a doubleheader with the men starting approximately 3:45 p.m. at Kaiser Park in Brooklyn, N.Y.
