York Snaps Lady Bears Soccer Three-Game Win Streak

BROOKLYN, N.Y.  – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback to York College (N.Y.) on Friday evening at Aviator Field.

St. Joseph's (5-4-2) snaps a three-game winning streak headed into the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference tournament on Sunday. York (5-10-1) wraps up their season on a positive note, ending a four-game skid.

Both teams saw limited scoring opportunities throughout the match finishing with seven shots each, but the Cardinals were opportunistic capitalizing on lapses in the Lady Bears defense.

York drew first blood in the eighth minute when Arieal Williams sprung Anna Lales free with a pass from the midfield and Williams dribbled wide to the right past Lady Bear goalkeeper, Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport HS), who came off her line and put the ball into the back of the empty net.

In the 61st minute, Lales struck again receiving a long ball that was headed down by Carolina Munoz splitting the Lady Bears defense and shooting the ball past Farinella.

St. Joseph's tried to apply pressure and finished with three second-half shots on goal, all saved by Kiara Liberos for the shutout win.

Junior Cynthia Gambino (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) finished with three shots to lead the Lady Bears and freshman Daniella Valencia (Corona, NY/Bayside HS) tallied two shots, both on goal, to lead the Lady Bears offense.

Farinella finished with three saves and absorbed the loss in net.

St. Joseph's heads into their first HVWAC tournament as the No. 1 seed and will host No. 4 Medgar Evers for a semifinal match on Sunday, October 28 at the SJC Outdoor Complex in Patchogue, N.Y. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
