Women's Soccer Pounces on Medgar Evers in Season Opener

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer scored three goals in the first five minutes and never turned back taking a 13-0 shutout of Medgar Evers College on Tuesday afternoon at Aviator Sports and Events Center in their 2014 season opener.

The Lady Bears (1-0) scored early and often with junior Shannon Fahy (Breezy Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) scoring unassisted in the 4th minute and junior Pamela Chernyakhovsky (Brooklyn, N.Y./Leon M. Goldstein) and freshman Cansu Usta (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) scoring two more quick goals in the next two minutes to start the scoring barrage that put the Lady Bears up 10-0 at intermission and ended with an SJC record 13 goals.

Fahy would finish the game scoring six goals – five coming in the first half – setting a new Lady Bears record for goals in a game, a mark that ranks tied for third all-time in NCAA Division III women's soccer. Her six tallies also vaulted her atop the SJC all-time goal scoring leaderboard with 20 goals, but is followed closely by Chernyakhovsky who finished with a hat trick on the day to score her 18th career goal.

In their first collegiate games, Usta recorded a hat trick and assisted on three more goals, while Christina Caruso (Queens, N.Y./St. John's Prep) contributed a goal and an assist. Shannon Rom (Breezy Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and Kristin D'Chiutiis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Scholars Academy) each chipped in an assist.

St. Joseph's dominated possession and held the Cougars to no recorded shots as senior Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) picked up her 11th career shutout in goal.

Marlene Thompson made 11 saves in taking the loss for the Cougars (0-2).

The Lady Bears return to Aviator Field for their 2014 home opener hosting former Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Sarah Lawrence College on Friday, September 12 starting at 7 p.m. Live stats will be available on SJCBears.com with updates on Twitter via @SJCBears.
