Quesada’s 19 Saves Aren’t Enough as Women’s Soccer Falls to SJC Long Island in Skyline Opener

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — In their first conference showdown, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team traveled to sister school SJC Long Island on Wednesday, but couldn't win the 2017 edition of the rivalry. Sophomore keeper Lauren Quesada (Westbury, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) had a solid performance, saving 19 of the 21 shots she saw on goal, however the two second half goals for the Golden Eagles were enough to vault them to their second Skyline victory.

The Basics

  • Final Score: SJC Long Island 2, SJC Brooklyn 0
  • Records: SJC Long Island (5-4, 2-0), SJC Brooklyn (4-3, 0-1)
  • Location: Patchogue, N.Y. — Danzi Stadium

How It Happened

  • The Golden Eagles were the aggressors from the kick-off, but Quesada saved three shots in the first seven minutes to avoid an early Bears deficit.
  • No scoring would occur for the entirety of the first half, but Quesada and the SJCBK defense were very busy.
  • The Bears were unable to register a shot in the opening 45. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fired 18 of their own, 13 of which were saved by Quesada.
  • Freshman Deserae Sequeira (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) attempted the visitors first shot in the 55th minute, which missed wide.
  • A stalemate would resume for just 14 more minutes, however, as Kristin Carroll received a pass outside the box and sniped the bottom right corner of the net to put the home team up 1-0.
  • SJCLI would pad the lead in the 82nd minute, with Mackenzie Nyitray notching her third goal of the year and sealing the deal on the Bears' first league loss.

For the Bears

  • Quesada put up a valiant effort in goal, matching her season and career-high of 19 saves (Sep. 2 at Bard).
  • Sequeira led a stymied Bears' offense, launching three of the squad's four goals.

The Bear Facts

  • With the loss, the Bears fall to 0-5 all time versus SJC Long Island.
