Women’s Soccer Cruises Past Medgar Evers for First Win of 2018

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Seven different Bears scored as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team (1-2) downed Medgar Evers College (0-1) 13-0 at Aviator Field on Saturday afternoon. The win was the team's first of the season led by sophomores Deserae Sequeira (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) and Anisah Molic (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner), who both scored three goals apiece.

How It Happened
Sequeira opened the scoring immediately in the second minute with her first goal of the season and two minutes later Rebecca De Rosa (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) found the back of the net for the second-straight game. Sequeira then tacked on her second of the game in the eighth minute and rookie Julia Lavelle (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) scored her first career goal in the 10th minute, giving SJC a 4-0 lead very early on.

The Bears didn't look back as they put up 10 goals in the first half and three more in the second while holding Medgar Evers to just one shot all game and zero shots on goal. St. Joseph's earned their first shutout of the season and first since a 1-0 victory over Sarah Lawrence on last season's Senior Night (Oct. 25, 2017).

For the Bears

  • Sophomore Rachel Rocha (Linden, N.J./Linden) scored her first two goals of the season, while senior Merima Kokale (Staten Island, N.Y./New Utrecht) also notched her first tally of 2018.
  • Valentina Calderon de la Barca (Houston, Texas/Santa Cruz Christian Learning Center) picked up her first career goal in the third game of her rookie campaign.
  • Freshman Mackenzie Fitzpatrick (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) dished out her first-career assist in the win.
