Rocha Nets Seventh Goal but Women’s Soccer Drops Overtime Finish to Mount Saint Vincent

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — Looking to snap a six-game losing streak, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team (6-8, 1-5) took on the College of Mount Saint Vincent (5-6-1, 2-4) at the SJC Outdoor Field Complex on Saturday and finished regulation knotted at 1-1 behind a goal from junior Rachel Rocha (Linden, N.J./Linden).

However, the Dolphins found the back of the net in the extra period while holding the Bears scoreless to hand SJC their fifth Skyline loss of 2019.

How It Happened
The Bears' defense was stout to open the contest and, despite 10 CMSV shots in the first half, held the hosts scoreless over the opening 45 minutes. Rocha tallied the game's first goal in the 21st minute as she finished a feed from classmate Deserae Sequeira (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson).

Sophomore keeper Reem Shaban (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) saved six shots before the break to keep St. Joseph's ahead 1-0 entering the second half. The first 20 minutes of the second were scoreless, despite a penalty kick attempt from Sequeira that went off the right post.

Mount Saint Vincent received a penalty kick of their own in the 74th minute that Alyssa Santeramo capitalized on and scored to tie things up at one. Regulation ended with a gridlock and overtime ensued, but the Bears were held shotless as CMSV clanged two shots off the crossbar before Emily McCarthy scored to seal the neck-and-neck victory.

For the Bears

  • Rocha's goal was her seventh of the season, which is tied for fourth on the squad, and Sequeira picked up her team-leading eighth assist.
  • Shaban saved 12 of the 14 shots she saw on goal.
  • Anisah Molic (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) was the only other Bear to attempt a shot on the day.
