Women’s Soccer Handed Non-Conference Defeat by John Jay

NEW YORK — In their final non-conference match of the season and the first of four consecutive road games, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team (5-5-1) dropped a 3-0 result to CUNYAC foe John Jay College (4-4-0) on Saturday afternoon from Randall's Island.

How it Happened

Following a scoreless first half – in which the Bears took four shots, all on target – the Bloodhounds found the opening goal in the 63rd minute thanks to Katie Healy's header off a corner from Brooke Fontaine. Following the restart, Julia Lavelle (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) was fouled by John Jay's keeper on the back end of a counterattack, resulting in a free-kick for the Bears. However, the ensuing shot went wide of the goal.

The hosts were awarded a penalty in the 79th minute and converted to double their advantage. They made it 3-0 in the 87th on Fontaine's goal from a set-piece to seal their victory.

For the Bears

  • Mia Castaneda (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) took a game-high five shots with a pair on target. Hayden Reis' (Atlanta, Ga./Community Christian School), Christina Di Bartolo (Middle Village, N.Y./Forest Hills), and Bethany Perez (Phelan, Calif./Serrano) also managed shots on goal.

  • Reis' two shots were good for second on the team.

  • Sierra Bedrin (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) came up with seven saves in her second start between the sticks.
