Castaneda’s Early Goal Not Enough as Maritime Slips Past Women’s Soccer

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. —  Freshman Mia Castaneda (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) gave the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team an early lead, but the Bears (5-7-1, 2-5) dropped a 2-1 decision to SUNY Maritime College in a Sunday Skyline Conference matinee at Reinhart Field.

How it Happened

Castaneda's ninth goal of the season came just over 10 minutes in as she fired a shot from 25 yards out that snuck inside the left post.

An own goal off a corner kick drew the teams even in the 26th minute and Maritime (4-7, 1-7) moved ahead, 2-1, with just over 10 minutes before halftime on Anya Josberger's free kick from 35 yards out.

With SJC searching for the equalizer in the second stanza, the Bears outshot the Privateers, 7-4, in the period — including four shots in the final 10 minutes —  and had a 4-2 edge in corners, but couldn't draw even.

For the Bears

  • Castaneda's strike was her ninth of the season, currently tied for seventh in the Skyline.
  • Heather Bollmann (Broad Channel, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) fired off four shots with two coming on target.
  • Christina Di Bartolo (Middle Village, N.Y./Forest Hills) sent off three shots, all prompting a save.
