Women’s Soccer Downed by Mount Saint Vincent on Senior Day

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team (6-8-1, 3-6-0 Skyline) suffered a 4-0 defeat by the College of Mount Saint Vincent (7-5-1, 6-3-0) on Saturday afternoon from Aviator Field.

Christina Di Bartolo (Middle Village, N.Y.), Julia Lavelle (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy), Reem Shaban (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht), and Briana Gomez (West Hempstead, N.Y./Kellenberg) were all recognized prior to the game during the program's Senior Day ceremony.

How it Happened

The Dolphins got on the board first with Naomi Juvera's sixth-minute header. Their lead grew to 3-0 by the 29' before Samantha Quinonez (Woodside, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) fired off the Bears' first shot of the contest. Caitlin May scored off the bench to end the opening half with a 4-0 lead.

In the 52', with Mount Saint Vincent's goalkeeper well off her line, Di Bartolo shot in front of an empty net but their defender got to the goal line in time to clear the ball away. Three minutes later, her chance from just inside the box banged off the woodwork. While CMSV posted 10 second-half shots, the Bears managed to keep them off the scoresheet any further; with Shaban and Alexis Breen (Union, N.J./Keyport) combining to produce three saves. However, the Dolphins walked away with the four-goal victory.

For The Bears

  • Mia Castaneda (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) led the team with three shots. Di Bartolo followed up with two and Quinonez and Ashley Vozella (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) took one each.

  • Di Bartolo's 52nd-minute shot went for the lone shot on goal.

  • Shaban led all keepers with seven saves. Breen's two were her only saves in 29 minutes of action.
