Lady Bears Tennis Blanks Vaughn in 2012 Opener

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team captured all seven matches en route to a 9-0 Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference victory over Vaughn College on Monday evening at the US National Tennis Center.

Junior Kelly McNamee (Glendale, NY/Mary Louis) followed up her strong rookie season after where she garnered HVWAC All-Conference team honors defeating fellow All-Conference selection Estefania Collazos, 10-2 at No. 1 singles. McNamee would later team up with senior Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) at No. 1 doubles for an 8-6 victory, Mangan's first career win.

A trio of rookies playing their first intercollegiate tennis matches contributed to the victory.  Junior Krysta Verdone (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) winning 10-2 at No. 2 singles, sophomore Victoria LaBosco (Glendale, NY/Archbishop Molloy) capturing a 10-1 triumph at No. 3 singles and junior Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport HS) winning 10-6 at No. 4 singles in the closest match of the singles session.

Senior Stephanie Quick (Howard Beach, NY/Stella Maris) clinched the match win for the Lady Bears with a 10-2 victory at No. 5 singles.

Verdone teamed up with senior Shamika Thomas (Brooklyn, NY/St. Joseph's) for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles to clinch the sweep.

St. Joseph's (1-0, 1-0 HVWAC) returns to action at the US National Tennis Center on Friday, September 28th squaring off against Cooper Union.  First serve is at 7 p.m.
