Women's Tennis Edged Out by HVIAC Rivals New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.—Junior Tathiana Pierre (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Ford) and sophomore Madeline Moravek (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) each secured two points, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team dropped a narrow Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision, 5-4, to The College of New Rochelle on Friday afternoon at the Beckwithe Pointe Tennis Club.

Pierre and partner Victoria LoBosco (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) teamed up for an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles while Moravek and Mary Edward (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) produced an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles to give the Lady Bears (1-6, 1-1 HVIAC) a 2-1 advantage after the end of doubles play.

The Blue Angels (2-6, 2-0 HVIAC) then captured the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches to take back the lead before Moravek defeated Samantha Gomez at No. 4 singles, 10-4, and reigning HVIAC Player of the Week Pierre grinded out a 10-7 victory over Deanna Tozzo at No. 1 singles—her third straight singles win and fifth straight including doubles—to give St. Joseph's a 4-3 edge.

But the hosts would take the final two matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles for the come-from-behind win.

St. Joseph's rematch against Albertus Magnus College scheduled for Sunday, October 12 has been canceled so the Lady Bears will return to the courts on Tuesday, October 14 hosting York College (N.Y.) in a non-conference match at the USTA National Tennis Center with first serve starting at 6 p.m.
