Women's Tennis Cruises Past York in Sweep

FLUSHING, N.Y.—Picking up their second win of the season, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team held York College to just seven games in total in a dominating 9-0 sweep on Tuesday evening at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The Lady Bears (2-6) sealed the victory after singles play was completed with Victoria LoBosco (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), Deirdre Lavelle (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) and Princess Baptiste (Atlanta, Ga./Benjamin Banneker) taking shutout wins at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

Tathiana Pierre (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Ford) extended her No. 1 singles win streak to four matches, surrendering just one game in a 10-1 triumph. Also limiting the Cardinals (1-9) to one game was Mary Edward (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Madeline Moravek (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

The Lady Bears also dominated doubles play with the No. 2 tandem of Edward and Moravek and No. 3 duo of Lavelle and Lauren Towey (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) collecting 8-1 wins, while Pierre extended her overall win streak to seven matches teaming up with Victoria LoBosco for an 8-2 win at the top spot.

St. Joseph's returns to the courts on Thursday hosting Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals Berkeley College at the National Tennis Center starting at 5 p.m.
