Women's Tennis Upends New Rochelle, Picks Up Second Win of Season

HARRISON, N.Y. — Tathiana Pierre (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Ford), Denise Trerotola (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour) and Princess Baptiste (Atlanta, Ga./Benjamin Banneker) each contributed a pair of points with victories in singles and doubles to lead the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory over The College of New Rochelle in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night.

How It Happened

  • Pierre and Trerotola blanked Nancy Varughese and Vindhiya Persaud at the top doubles position and Mary Edward and Princess Baptiste downed Samantha Gomez and Iyesoqie Aghahowa at No. 2 doubles.
  • Brianna Vurckio and Katie Wenzler fought back from a 7-2 deficit at No. 3 doubles against Shirley Garcia and Marie Gomez, before dropping a hard-fought 9-7 decision and the Lady Bears held a 2-1 lead moving into singles.
  • Trerotola and Baptiste both cruised in their singles matches, with 8-0 triumphs at No. 2 singles and No. 6 singles, respectively.
  • Katie Wenzler played a great match at No. 4 singles—after playing all three of her previous matches at the No. 6 flight—and downed Garcia, 8-2.
  • Pierre topped Varughese at the top singles position, 8-3, as SJC took four of the six singles flights.
