Gil Tapped Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Director of Athletics and Recreation James Lally has announced Eduardo Gil as the new head men's and women's tennis coach at St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn). Gil brings with him an extensive tennis background dating back to the late 1980's in his home city of Caracas, Venezuela.

"We are very excited to welcome Eduardo to the Bears family," commented Lally. "Eduardo brings with him extensive playing and coaching experience and a great vision for player development as well as recruitment."

In 1987, '89, and '90 Gil was the number one 18-and-under men's tennis player in Caracas, Venezuela and top 10 in the country.  He went on to play collegiately at Metropolitan University in Caracas as the number one singles and doubles position.

United States Professional Tennis Association certified, he has been working as a tennis professional at various clubs for nearly 20 years, and has been a pro at Prospect Park Tennis in Brooklyn since 2004. Besides private clubs, Gil has coached men's and women's tennis teams at the USTA 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 levels, as well as nationally ranked juniors in 14- and 16-and-under categories.

As a player, Gil has appeared in his share of high-profile events.From there, he appeared as an alternate doubles player at the 2013 US Open. Additionally, Gil played doubles in the same bracket as Lleyton Hewitt during the 2013 ATP 250 Professional Tournament at the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.

"I feel honored for the opportunity to coach St. Joseph's tennis teams. I'm really looking forward to teaching, as well as learning from the coaching experience," remarked Gil on the appointment to his first collegiate coaching job.

The Bears open their 2017 campaign on Sunday, September 17 in a Skyline Conference road match against Yeshiva University at the Queens College Tennis Courts.
