Women’s Tennis Sweeps Sarah Lawrence in Breast Cancer Awareness Game

FLUSHING, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team swept a team for the first time since 2014, defeating Sarah Lawrence College on Tuesday evening in Skyline Conference action at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

It was the first 9-0 triumph since a sweep of York on October 14, 2014. It was also just the second victory over the Gryphons (1-7, 1-3 Skyline) in 15 meetings all time and the first sweep of a Skyline opponent in program history.

The Bears (2-5, 2-2 Skyline) captured all nine matches in convincing fashion, surrendering no more than three games in each victory.

Senior Denise Trerotola (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour) improved her Skyline singles record to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the lead singles match. She later paired up with freshman Ashleigh Hartwig (Santee, Calif./West Hills) for an 8-0 triumph in the top pairs match. Hartwig notched her first collegiate singles win with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph in the No. 2 position.

Posting an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, partners Valentina Velez Valencia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and Daniella Alva (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) won by matching 6-2, 6-0 scores at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Jennifer Garcia (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also won by the same margin at No. 5 singles. For Velez Valencia and Garcia, it was their first singles victory of the season.

Mariela Picon (Flushing, N.Y./Robert F. Wagner) collected the third singles win of her rookie campaign blanking her opponent at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0. She teamed up with Devyn Stansky (Breezy Point, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles, Stansky recording her first collegiate win.
