Women’s Tennis Upends York College for Their First Win of the Season

JAMAICA, N.Y. — Sophomore Ashleigh Hartwig (Santee, Calif./West Hills) stayed undefeated, reeling in two points for the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team (1-1) in their 6-3 win over York College (0-1) on Thursday afternoon.

The Bears led at No. 1 doubles before an injury swung the opening point to York's favor, but the navy and gray would win back-to-back doubles matches with senior Valentina Velez Valencia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and Hartwig teaming up for their second straight doubles win. The senior pairing of Daniella Alva (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and Jennifer Garcia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) took their first doubles win of the season in the No. 3 position. In those two matches, the Bears allowed just one game to the hosts.

In singles play, Valez Valencia swept through her match in the 4th spot, winning at love to notch her first singles win of the season and the sixth of her career. Hartwig maintained her unblemished record on the season, dropping just one game in the No. 5 position.

Freshman Raquel Ramirez (Woodhaven, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) would pick up her first collegiate win in singles, in a 6-3, 6-0 straight-set win to solidify the Bears' first win of the season.

The Bears open Skyline Conference play against Yeshiva University on Thursday, September 12. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Crotona Park in Bronx, N.Y.
